Capitol Hill Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Meeting Minutes

Monday, May 7, 2007  7:00 pm

Minutes from the April 9, 2007 PTO meeting were approved with the addition of Ed Davis' last name.

Treasurer's Report (Julie Taylor): Carnival income was $13,848.10, while expenses were $4,620.01, for a profit of $9,228.09.  Checking, savings, and money market total balance is $26,421.78.  Direct Drive has now brought in $13,109.16.  Expenses are rolling in and will continue through the rest of the school year.

Principal's Report (Mr. Mariucci): Next Monday, May 14, Site Council will approve the SCIP at a public meeting and there will also be an opportunity for parents of 2nd-4th grade students to learn about the reading study next year.

Old Business:

Carnival Wrap-up: It was a great carnival.  We may have been shorted on tickets by the vendor and had to recycle tickets. We will try to use a different vendor next year.  We will want to discuss the auction piece before next year.  We currently do two fundraisers per year through PTO, the Direct Drive and Carnival.  We may want to add a third event, the silent auction or live auction as a separate event.  Or the silent auction could be held online.

Joint Rondo Playground Initiative: On Friday, the playground group met with city council member Deborah Montgomery and school board member Tom Goldstein.  Deborah will try to find at least $10,000 for the playground.  The group will also present a request to the school board on May 15 for help with money for site preparation.  The total amount still needed is $200,000 to $250,000.  The playground is in truly sad shape, with broken parts and poor drainage.  There will be another gala as a fundraiser on February 28, 2008.

YBT Travel Opportunity (Robyn Johnson): Robyn was not present.  This is a travel organization where purchases would provide a percentage to PTO, which could donate the proceeds received this way to the playground fund.

Development of a Scholarship Request Rubric: PTO will work with Dana Carmichael Tanaka over the summer to prepare a rubric to be ready for the next year.  The rubric will help PTO compare requests for money and determine what will be funded in a fair way.

New Business:

6th Grade Valley Fair Field Trip:  6th grade has only about $114 left in their field trip fund.  That's not enough for the Valley Fair field trip, so they will be asking parents for contributions.

New Officers for next year: We need a treasurer, a secretary, chair-elect, volunteer coordinator and a Carnival coordinator.

Gamelan Grant: Beth Sawyer is handling this and has already submitted the grant to the State Arts Board.  The Midway Target is closed, so it's difficult to find whom to communicate with about a Target grant.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 pm.

Respectfully submitted by Randi Madisen, PTO Secretary
