February will be a busy orchestra month with two major events. I am delighted to present 6th, 7th & 8th grade students at the MNSOTA Festival, which features Jr. High and Middle School Orchestras from around our region. The second event is for all Capitol Strings & Jr High students and is the combined concert at Central H.S. My friends and colleagues Corey Needleman and Matthew Oyen from Ramsey Jr. High and Central HS are very pleased to hold this event together. Please look for notices from your daughter / son with further details.

Rehearsal 5:00 to 6:30 (with a short bathroom and snack break)
Concert 7:00 - 8:00 PM at Central H.S. Auditorium

Choosing an instrument to rent or purchase
There is bewildering array of choices in finding an instrument for your
child. The following list of some area music stores may be helpful to
you. I recommend investigating several sources to get an idea of the
range of both quality and price, including shops that specialize in
stringed instruments. By checking several store websites, you can get
a pretty good idea of which brands are beginning and intermediate level
instruments and how much they cost to buy or rent. Places to avoid, are large non-music discount stores which offer very cheap instruments and know little about them.

Junior High Concert Orchestra
Concert Orchestra (Junior High) is an ensemble for intermediate and
advanced 7th & 8th grade string players on violin, viola, cello, or
bass. Students should read music fluently and have successfully
completed two or more standard method books, (such as Essential
Elements, Strictly Strings, Suzuki etc.). Well established techniques
should include two octave scales in keys up to 2 sharps and 2 flats,
proper basic posture, with good left hand position, and good use of all
parts of the bow. There is also a limited number of openings for highly
skilled pianists who have the capability and interest in accompanying.
Class meets Period 1 every day. the full year.

Capitol Strings
Capitol Strings is a more advanced elementary orchestra for players who read notes fluently and are well into the equivalent of Suzuki Book 2 or more.
1 small group lesson per week.
1 Capitol Strings group rehearsal per week.
Lesson books: Suzuki book of appropriate level and other technical material as needed.

Blue and Green Orchestra
The Blue & Green Orchestra (Beginning Orchestra and Continuing Suzuki)
This orchestra is for beginning students from grades 4 through 6, and
is ALSO for Suzuki students who have completed Suzuki Book 1 and are
learning to read notes. We use Essential Elements 2000, Book 1 for
note reading purposes and learn to play beginning level string
orchestra pieces.
1 small group (2-5 students) lesson per week.
1 string orchestra rehearsal per week.
Lesson books: Essential Elements 2000, Book One (Hal Leonard Pub.)
and Suzuki Book 1 or 2 (Depending on your experience)

Suzuki Strings
Suzuki Strings for students in grades 1 through 3.
1 semi-private lesson per week with 2 students at a time, with parents attending lessons.
1 Book One Group Class for violin, viola & cello. The group class will feature play-in style practice of pieces, from the beginner level through book 1.
