Minutes from the March 5, 2007 PTO meeting were approved as submitted.
Treasurer's Report (Julie Taylor): Expenses for the 4-6th grade dance were under budget. Expenses for athletic uniforms and the 3rd grade puppeteering project have been paid. Checking, savings, and money market total balance is $16,969.70. The Direct Drive has brought in $12,530 so far.
Old Business:
April Foolishness Carnival:
Chess Club Table: In February, Chess Club requested funding for students going to the Nationals. PTO floated the idea of allowing Chess Club to keep their earnings and do some fundraising at Carnival. Later, the Carnival coordinator discussed the fact that it's a bad idea to let one group keep their money since it's a community fundraising event. In fact, another group was not allowed to do separate fundraising at the Carnival. In the meantime, the Chess Club proceeded with plans to do fundraising at Carnival. Now PTO needs to decide what to do. Darlene Haecker made a motion that no group at Carnival be allowed to raise money for their own purposes. The motion was seconded and passed. There was lots of discussion about whether we should wait to create a rubric before making a decision. The rubric will need to be in place before next school year, but it is unfair to delay this decision or make it on a different basis than others this year. There was discussion about whether or not there was any extra money in the budget. Darlene Haecker made a motion to deny the request for Chess Club funding for Nationals. Ed Davis made a friendly amendment that the reason for the denial is that this was not in the budget approved last fall. The motion was seconded and passed.
Donation needs: Ed has 18 items for the live auction. The web site is live. The online form needs some tweaking. Volunteers seem to be ok.
Rondo Playground Fundraiser: 250 people attended and $14,000 was raised. Classrooms raised over $900 in coins to date, but the buckets need to go back to the classroom.
New Business:
Scholarship Request Rubric: Dana Carmichael Tanaka is willing to work with PTO on developing a rubric, but only if PTO promises to use the rubric. Some of the things we need to ask are what bothers us about our current decision-making process? How would a rubric solve that? Are we willing to share all of our criteria publicly? What are our 3 or 4 core funding principles? Are all of our core funding principles equally important?
Barnes & Noble Fundraising Opportunity: We're unclear whether this is gift-wrapping or book buying related.
Grant Writing for next year: Lisa Heyman and Susan Schuster will work on Gamelan grants for 6th grade and grants for the 3rd grade puppeteering for next year.
Officers for next year: Kristin needs to know if people will continue next year or if we need to find new people.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:02 pm.
Respectfully submitted by Randi Madisen, PTO Secretary
